Title I Services

Title I Services in the Wichita Public Schools are made possible by federal funding that is set aside to states under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). The purpose of this law is to improve educational opportunities in schools with high concentrations of poverty. ESEA is reauthorized by the U.S. Congress periodically and we are, at this time, operating under the 2000 law known as No Child Left Behind (NCLB).

No Child Left Behind has four pillars:
Stronger Accountability for Results
More Flexibility for States and Communities
Proven Educational Methods
More Choices for Parents
NCLB has led to a focus on student achievement data for all students as well as subgroups. It has supported the use of research-based instructional strategies and provided options to parents through choice and free tutoring. The law, however, has a very specific definition of progress that led to the identification of many schools across the county as "in need of improvement". ESEA reauthorization is currently underway and may be finalized by the Summer of 2011.
