Our first graders raised $322 for the St Katharine Drexel Fund!
What a great week we have ahead of us celebrating our Catholic School! Here at Christ the King our first graders are growing in so many ways. Their faith is blossoming more each day and it is a blessing to be able to be a part of their growth. We are so very thankful for all the support for our school.
Yesterday we were Celebrating the Community we live in! The students gathered bars of soap to donate as our whole school made bags for the homeless.
It's Kansas' Birthday!! Today our first graders are learning all things Kansas. This afternoon we will have our Student Extravanganza, where the students can learn many new skills and discover new things!
More to come the rest of the week too!! If you haven't joined our Class Dojo story yet, you are missing out on some great happenings each day!
First grade is back on track for our second half of the school year.
This month we have started Walk in Sister's Shoes.
Walk in Sister’s Shoes is a school initiative to raise money to support the St. Katharine Drexel Catholic School Fund.
The money raised through Walk In Sisters Shoes helps support the parish schools in our diocese who have less than others. All across our diocese there are children learning about Jesus in classrooms lacking in some of the resources enjoyed in other schools.
Our students are asked to support each other. Catholic school students in every school are given the opportunity to help each other, to learn about the life and legacy of St. Katharine Drexel, and to raise funds for the St. Katharine Drexel Catholic School Fund. The results have been astounding. Since 2010, close to $390,000 has been raised to support the St. Katharine Drexel Fund through the efforts of students.
Catholic school students are clearly learning lessons that go beyond reading, writing, science, and math, to learning that love of neighbor and caring for each other is just as, or perhaps, more important. They are recognizing the need of others, and have taken action to help by supporting the Saint Katharine Drexel Catholic School Fund through Walk in Sister’s Shoes.
At the end of the month we will celebrate our school with Catholic Schools Week!
This year’s theme is Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.
The last couple months have just flown by! For those of you following our class story on Class Dojo, you have got to enjoy lots of pictures. Our students are learning and enjoying time with each other. If you haven't signed up for Class Dojo yet, you'll want to get on. Our class story is lots of fun!
This week we are studying the author Tomie dePaola. He is one of my favorties, so I love sharing his work with my students!
We got our first art mail from him today!
Our school year is off to a great start! We are going strong in first grade. Students are doing so well with our routines and procedures. We have small groups running smoothly. Daily 5 is close to being mastered. Our class dojo app makes it easy for parents to stay in touch with our classroom. The students enjoy "showing off" what they are learning and working on.
Religion: Our focus has been on our church community. We are learning that we belong to Jesus' church, we gather to celebrate Mass, God's word teaches us, and we give praise to God. We have learned about our parish family and to be thankful.
Social Studies: Our focus has been on school long ago. We have been looking at what it was like to go to school 100 years ago.
Science: Our focus so far has been on the weather. We are more aware of what is happening in the sky. Next week, we start on animals.
Math: It is important for first graders to master their math facts. So far we are learning addition facts to 10 and using strategies to remember.
English Language Arts: Phonics and phonemic awareness are huge for first graders. We are striving to build a solid foundation for our readers. They are also looking at nouns and verbs and writing a solid sentence. Air punctuation is a big hit.
STEM: Our first graders love to build and work together. This month they built a structure to withstand Kansas wind (a hairdryer).
Art: We love Art! We have learned about symmetry, pointillism technique, and primary colors.
Coming Soon...... Mystery Readers! On Fridays we would like to invite our parish family into the classroom and read their favorite childhood book to our class. Also, we would love to get to know them! If you are interested, please email me.
I am so excited to get to know you all! School is just a few days away. I have been busy this summer getting everything ready for you! I hope to see you at the Ice Cream Social on August 14th at 7pm. We are going to have an awesome school year! See you all soon!
