Each student now has an xtramath account in order to practice their multiplication facts. We will be using this at school, but it is also something they can be doing at home. This will start them off on addition and subtraction, but will move them into multiplication and division as they move up.

I wanted to give you as much detail as I could about the animal research project that your student will be working on in Science over the next month. Maybe your child is already buzzing with excitement about this assignment, and maybe this is the first you have heard about it, aside from the newsletter.
Students have chosen the animal that they wanted to research. They will be using the school library and I am going to work on getting them into our computer lab to do some online research. If students desire to go to the zoo and talk to someone about their animal, if possible, they may; this is NOT a requirement however.
Students will be going through the writing process with this assignment. This means that they will be gathering information, putting the information into a graphic organizer, creating a rough draft of their paper, working on proofreading with a partner, proofreading with me, and finally creating a typed final draft. The paper that they write is going to be a 5 paragraph, double spaced, one-page paper. In their paper students will be writing about the animal’s habitat, diet, what it does for survival, and any other interesting facts about it. A bibliography for their sources will be included too. They will just need to include the title and author on books, and the article title and website on internet resources.
After working on the paper, students will create a diorama of their animal in their natural habitat. This part of the assignment will be at home. This diorama just needs to be in a shoebox, or it can be a poster board drawing. On the 24th and 25th of January students will be presenting their diorama to the class and reading their paper aloud to the class.
The final draft and diorama are both due on January 23rd. Students will be teaching the class about their animal on the 24th and 25th.

Students will be having another handwriting packet this week. Please encourage your student to work on a page a day in order to not rush through the entire packet on Friday, when it is due.

Please talk with your student about any missing work they have. Missing work WILL NOT be accepted after October 15th! If they are in need of the assignment, they will need to write me a note about the assignment(s) they are in need of.
Your student will be bringing home a paper tomorrow for an interview that they need to do with you. I have also uploaded it into the documents. Please take the time to interview with your child; it could be a great dinner conversation! If your child wants to do both parents that is fine! This assignment is due on Monday, September 10th!!
